Getting 99% stone removal isn't just about buying a good machine — it's about operating it correctly. Even the best rice destoner will underperform if the settings aren't dialed in. This guide covers the four key factors that determine your stone removal rate and how to optimize each one.
1. Vibration Frequency: The Heart of Separation
Vibration frequency is measured in RPM (revolutions per minute) and directly controls how grains and stones move across the sieve. The physics is simple: a properly tuned frequency creates a fluidized bed where lighter grains float on top while heavier stones sink and travel upward against the flow.

4. Feeding Speed: Consistency Is Everything
The most overlooked factor is feed consistency. A rice destoner works best with a steady, uniform feed rate. Common mistakes:
- Overfeeding: The sieve overloads, the fluidized bed collapses, and stones get buried under grain. Even with perfect settings, overfeeding kills separation.
- Underfeeding: A thin layer means too much air escapes through the grain. The bed becomes unstable and stones scatter randomly.
- Surge feeding: Manual bucket dumping creates surges. Each surge temporarily overloads the sieve, and stones escape with the grain during those moments.
Solution: Use a feed hopper with an adjustable gate, or install a small conveyor or bucket elevator for continuous feeding. The goal is a consistent 2-4cm grain depth across the entire sieve surface.
5. Grain Moisture: The Hidden Variable
Moisture content dramatically affects separation. Wet grain is heavier and stickier — it doesn't fluidize well. Ideal moisture ranges:
- Rice (paddy): 14-16% moisture
- Wheat: 12-14% moisture
- Corn: 13-15% moisture
