Rice Mill Destoner: Before or After Milling?

Updated: October 16, 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes · Baochi Machinery

Both positions can be useful for different purposes. A destoner before milling is mainly used to remove stones before they can reach the huller and milling equipment. A destoner after milling can provide an additional cleaning stage for processed rice that still contains heavy impurities.

Destoner Before Milling

The pre-milling arrangement is:

Paddy → Destoner → Rice Huller → Rice Milling

This is the preferred position when the main goal is to protect the downstream processing equipment. Removing stones early reduces the amount of hard foreign material entering the huller.

Destoner After Milling

The post-milling arrangement is:

Rice Milling → Destoner → Final Cleaning

This can be considered when processed rice still contains stones, sand or other heavy impurities and a final separation stage is required.

Main benefits

Which Position Is Right for Your Rice Mill?

GoalPotential position
Protect rice hullerBefore milling
Reduce stone exposure to rubber rollersBefore hulling
Final removal of heavy impurities from processed riceAfter milling
Maximum process controlPotentially more than one cleaning stage

The correct arrangement should be determined from the actual material, contamination level and existing equipment.

Conclusion

For most rice mills, pre-milling destoning is valuable because it removes stones before they enter the hulling equipment. Post-milling destoning is a separate final-cleaning application. The two approaches address different points in the process.
